Anyfields at URSI GASS 2026: Advancing antenna measurements with infrared thermography

From 17 to 21 August 2026, Stéphane Fauré, Technology Expert at Anyfields will participate in the XXXVI URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium (URSI GASS 2026) in Kraków, Poland. Recognized as one of the world’s leading conferences in radio science, URSI GASS brings together more than 1,500 researchers, engineers and industrial experts from over 60 countries to discuss the latest advances in electromagnetics, antennas, propagation, sensing, metrology and communication systems.

Presenting a new approach to antenna gain measurement

On 21 August, Stéphane Fauré, R&D Technology Expert at Anyfields, will give an oral presentation during the special session:

“Recent Advances in Measurement Techniques for Spatially Distributed Electromagnetic Fields.”

This interdisciplinary session brings together researchers developing innovative techniques for measuring electromagnetic fields, including near-field and far-field antenna characterization, holography, imaging, scanning systems, probe technologies and advanced data-processing methods.

Our presentation introduces a novel measurement method entitled:

On-axis Realized Gain Estimation Using Infrared Thermography

The work demonstrates how infrared thermography can be used to estimate the realized gain of high-gain antennas without the use of a conventional probe antenna. Instead of measuring the electromagnetic field with a receiving antenna, the method captures the near-field spatial distribution of RF power using Infrared Thermography Measurement device.

This approach offers several advantages:

  • rapid antenna characterization with a single acquisition,
  • no probe antenna or vector receiver required,
  • measurements at distances significantly shorter than conventional far-field criteria,
  • simplified experimental setup,
  • reduced testing time and infrastructure.

Experimental results show that the proposed technique can estimate the realized on-axis gain with an accuracy better than 0.7 dB while operating at distances from the antenna under test below the usual far-field criterion, opening new perspectives for fast industrial antenna testing and validation.

Building the next generation of electromagnetic measurements
